Under the supervision of the Environmental Program Manager in the Lands Program, the Senior Environmental Scientist Specialist coordinates the Department’s Wildlife Area System.  The Senior ES Specialist works with a statewide team of Wildlife Area Managers to identify land protection needs and develop public use and stewardship policies, procedures and regulations; immediate and long-range statewide priorities for habitat management, public use, strategic planning and operations; and partnerships.  The Senior ES Specialist coordinates budgets, new and improved infrastructure, personnel, component work planning, equipment development and training for the Wildlife Area System.  The position is the statewide coordinator of the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Program that provides funding for the restoration and management of Wildlife Areas, and works with a statewide team of Wildlife Area Managers to develop, update and implement guidelines and goals for their management.  See www.wildlife.ca.gov/lands for more information on the Department’s Wildlife Area System.

The reporting location for this position is Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA), 7800 Cienega Road, Hollister, CA 95023.  This position will work under the general direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory).  The Senior Environmental Scientist Specialist is expected to carry out duties to accomplish the District’s natural resource management goals with a focus on Hollister Hills SVRA.  Work may be done in other sector units such as Henry Coe State Park (SP) and Fremont Peak SP.  The job duties include the ability to perform a variety work to restore and maintain State Park resources including revegetation, data collection and analysis, report writing, wildlife monitoring, soil disturbance monitoring, hydrologic site conditions assessment, exotic plant removal, invasive animal work, and watershed management.  As expected, this job requires working outdoors in inclement weather conditions, hiking over uneven and steep terrain, and carrying heavy loads.  This position will include interacting with other agencies, managing crews, lead trainings and manage natural resource related projects. 

 The incumbent’s shift will be 4/10s depending on workload/operational needs but may also work nights and weekends depending on program/project needs
