We had the St. Louis Missouri Psychiatric Rehab come in to our CET last fall.  They did a presentation about handling those not only with a mental illness but who are hearing impaired.  Great information.  They discussed the several different groups within the deaf community.  One is very militant and does not like hearing people.  There are all sorts of variances within this.  All you can do is do your best when interacting with the varying groups.

There is a militant deaf community that were on our fb page, none of which lived in O'Fallon. I told them if they don't like it dont use it. We have already given out 10 to deaf people and families with deaf children. I just ignore the vocal minority.

Hey just a heads up. We made some stickers for the deaf some time ago.

You wouldn’t believe the hostility it caused with some of the deaf.

Others were very appreciative. Maybe since this has other disabilities along with it... it won’t be like that.

But they said we were putting a target on their backs to be robbed and a whole bunch of other stuff.

It was on our Facebook a couple years ago. To be honest I quit doing it because it was more trouble than it was worth.

I hate Facebook. LOL. I think one person got a multitude upset. I had to meet people and take calls for weeks.

I thought I would share these with everyone. We started giving them out last week and have had a tremendous response from not only our residents, but from people from outside our metro area and state.
