Dear NAPSA Members:

The Massachusetts Disabled Persons Protection Commission (DPPC) received an ACL grant to develop assistive technology to assist people with I/DD in recognizing, reporting and responding to abuse.  DPPC’s R3 project is researching and developing a technological solution to improve the detection and reporting of abuse by adults with I/DD. Focus groups have been conducted to gather foundational information, but the project team has also developed a survey to collect a broader scope of information about how people with disabilities use technology in their daily lives, and how that technology could be used to educate people about abuse and assist them in reporting and responding to it.

We are hoping you would be able to distribute this survey to the individuals you serve (DPPC has also distributed this information through Massachusetts’s self-advocacy organization and the state Department of Developmental Services). The informational blurb and link to the survey is as follows.

Thank you,

Mariah C. Freark

Assistant General Counsel

Commonwealth of Massachusetts

Disabled Persons Protection Commission

We want to hear from you! The Massachusetts Disabled Persons Protection Commission is working with self-advocates from Massachusetts Advocates Standing Strong, the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services, and professors from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a project to learn more about how people with disabilities use technology.

We have an online survey to learn more from you about computers, iPads and cell phones and how they work for you. How can we help you use these systems to recognize, report and respond to abuse?

We also want to know:

-                     About your daily life and lifestyle

-                     About your support staff and how they help you

-                     About your work, school, daily program

Things we ask about in the survey will be confidential and private. We are asking for people who are o.k. talking about abuse in general (this will not be a time for personal stories).

If you are interested in helping out by telling us your opinion, the survey is here: http://wpi.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8C943wwOI1ShPCd
