It seems that Ebsco has come up with a nice scenario that seems made for the activation questions that we all come up with.

EBSCO EJS model

Registration needed yes or no

Registration url

Title no's

Information regarding whether or not ip's and proxies are allowed (of course we want this)

Special notes this is very helpful

Also, Ebsco has a very nice helper Suzanne Barnes for anything that is complicated.

I also read in part about a thing that a university in Colorado is trying called Kuali?  New business model based on primariy academic use of content, hope that this finally puts some competition in the content provider cycle, keep it simple is the mantra.

http://www.kuali.org/kfs

Would anyone like to tell their story about this Kuali concept?

One point I would like to make. This should be just like claiming a =

This is a fairly common problem for us as well.  Several online =

renewals

lapse, just like we would have occasional lapses with print =

subscriptions.

The problem for us is that users and staff notice immediately if we =

have

lost access to an online title. In the print world, claims would =

often pile

up to let us know a print subscription had lapsed but we rarely =

heard from

    staff about it.

I am also interested in how other libraries handle new online

subscriptions.  It is my experience that we will place orders for =

several

new ejournals in the fall and then when we check access in January, =

many of

them have not been turned on for us.  I seem to spend a significant =

amount

of time in January claiming online access to our new subscriptions.

"What is supposed to happen next?"

In my experience, it varies with each publisher. My subscription

agent does not make sure I have access-- it's up to me. They will

assist with fixing it if I discover that it doesn't work, but I have

to check it. And I don't have time to check everything, so I am sure

that some of them fall through the cracks. I am always discovering

problems when I am checking for something else!

I sign up for new issue alerts and toc's for some titles on most of

the platforms, and sometimes I find out that way about something not

    working.

But I am interested in how others handle this too.

My process is to get a listing of all our "online" and "print+online" tit=

les

each January from our subscription agent, along with information on how t=

o

setup access for each one.  I can get the list right from my subscription=

vendor's website.

I prioritize the "online only" titles, since that's our only format for

access.=20=20

Once I have a list of titles where access isn't working as it should (or =

at

all), I email the list to our subscription vendor, along with notes for e=

ach

title, regarding what seems to be the problem.  They're definitely very

helpful, which they should be, since that's why we use them in the first

place -- to help us with our subscriptions.

In a few cases, it ended up being easier for me to talk directly to the

publisher, but I always check with our subscription vendor first 1) So th=

ey

know there's a problem 2) In case they know of a reason why there's a

problem, and can offer a quick remedy for it 3) because they are able to

rally our cause for us/alongside us with the publishers.

This year I had an initial list of about 20 titles, half of which were

resolved the same day... the other 10 took longer, and I'm still waiting =

on

5 of them (it's been about 3 weeks now?)

I wish you luck!

Take care,

Cyndi

both. Experience will tell you which approach to take. For Ingenta I tend=

go straight to the agent because they often just don't respond to me with=

suspect most agents want to at least be CC'd so they know there maybe pro=

BISG and NISO to Co-Host 4th Annual Standards Forum at ALA's Annual

Conference

June 25, 2010 half-day forum will focus on the changing standards landscape

from the end-users' perspective

Building on three years of successful co-programming, the Book Industry

Study Group (BISG) and the National Information Standards Organization

(NISO) will again co-host The Changing Standards Landscape on June 25, 2010

from 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM, directly prior to the American Library

Association's Annual Conference in Washington, DC. This year's free,

half-day program will focus on standards as they're experienced by readers

and other content consumers and feature thought leadership in the critical

areas of identification, discovery and format. Those interested in attending

should RSVP to nisohq@niso.org.

"The Changing Standards Landscape has become a tremendously successful event

since its inception four years ago," said Todd Carpenter, NISO's Managing

Director. "Developing a deeper understanding between the publishing,

distribution and library supply chains is increasingly critical and each

year we've focused on significant challenges our communities face alongside

standards and best practice solutions. This year's program will highlight

again how rapidly our industry is changing and how BISG and NISO are

proactively addressing these issues."

Mr. Carpenter will be onsite to co-chair the forum alongside BISG's

Executive Director, Scott Lubeck. Together they will guide attendees through

three programmatic themes:

1.    Identify and Describe

2.    Format, Discover and Retrieve

3.    Purchase and Use

"The ways in which end-users eventually experience and interact with

standards largely drives how these standards are built," said Mr. Lubeck.

"We're happy to be able to bring light to this important perspective, one

shared by both BISG and NISO."

The Changing Standards Landscape is organized jointly by the NISO and BISG.

Both organizations support, promote and maintain standards and best

practices in the information community. NISO focuses on publishers,

libraries and the systems suppliers in information distribution. BISG

focuses on the book supply chain of publishers, manufacturers, wholesale and

retail suppliers.
