Thank you all;  I am in the process of going back through site licenses (if in existence) for these and other cancelled titles to see what the post cancellation policy states, or to see what types of subscriptions they were..perhaps we will be in better shape with the others..

Your input is much appreciated..

Best,

Joanne

I only count on perpetual access to our subscribed years if it is explicitly stated in our signed agreement.  Even then, it is not a guarantee.  If the title moves publishers, the publishers folds, etc, that access may not be guaranteed.  The best guarantee for perpetual access is LOCKSS or Portico.

We really try not to move a title to electronic only unless our agreement states that we will have perpetual access to our subscribe years.  As we face an upcoming serials cut, we will certainly consider how willing the publisher is to work with the library regarding issues such as perpetual access, ILL, and contract negotiations.

Whether you can count on post-cancellation online access might depend on the nature of the subscriptions you maintained to these journals.  If you had online-only subscriptions, or print-plus-online subscriptions, in either case with a site license, I would think you might well be able to expect continuing access to material published during the years you were a subscriber (consult your license).  If, however, these were "online-free-with-print" subscriptions, without a site license, you might be out of luck.  Often these subscriptions give you online access only as long as you maintain the print subscription, and as soon as you cancel the print, your online access disappears.

I am wondering how many librarians have dealt with this scenario;  we were not able to renew several of our long-standing journal subscriptions for 2010.  Most were journals we had subscribed for the last 10 years.

This is nothing new, but so far I’ve had one publisher cut off our online access completely because we no longer have a current subscription, and another publisher cut off access mid-year in 2009 for the same reason.  I’m wondering how many others will do the same.

It’s irritating  to have paid for content and then not be allowed to retain the access to years paid because you can’t keep up with the current subscription—There is nothing that can be done, of course;  publishers can enforce any policy they wish.  However, I am wondering how many other librarians have had to deal with this practice, and, have you had any success changing a publisher’s mind about cutting off access?

Best,

Joanne
