ChemSpider, the Royal Society of Chemistry's free online chemistry database, won its third award of the year last week.

ChemSpider was awarded the prestigious ALPSP Award for Publishing Innovation 2010 in a shortlist of four. This Award recognises a significantly innovative approach to any aspect of publication. The judges considered the originality and innovative qualities of each application, together with its utility, benefit to its community and long term development prospects.

The judges said: "ChemSpider has quickly become a highly valued and comprehensive community resource and has immense potential for future development."

ChemSpider, which won the iExpo/KM Forum 2010 'Most Innovative Software' award in June on the back of the Bio-IT Best Practice Award for Community Service in April, links together compound information across the web, providing free text and structure search access of millions of chemical structures. With an abundance of additional property information, tools to curate and use the data, and integration to a multitude of other online services, ChemSpider is the richest single source of structure-based chemistry information available online.

Antony Williams, VP Strategic Development at the RSC, said: "Our efforts remain focused on innovating and extending the reach of the ChemSpider platform with the intention of providing a free online resource of high-quality chemistry data for the community. We are honoured that ALPSP have acknowledged our work with this innovation award."

Dear Colleagues,

Please forgive cross-posting. I hope it is of interest to the list that Annual Reviews has this summer published two new journals, for the first time providing overviews of the fields of Condensed Matter Physics and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. I have pasted the press release and contact information below.

Best wishes,

Two New Annual Reviews Journals Will Connect Library Users to Wider Collections and Help Overcome Information Overload

Palo Alto, CA – September 20, 2010. Annual Reviews, the nonprofit publisher that intelligently synthesizes critical research literature, has launched two new journals during the summer of 2010. The Annual Review of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (http://chemeng.annualreviews.org), published in July 2010, focuses on the development of chemical products and processes, and helps to integrate the field of chemical engineering by providing a view across its many different subsections. The Annual Review of Condensed Matter Physics (http://condmat.annualreviews.org), published in August 2010, looks systematically at the mainstream developments in the field while also exploring the multidisciplinary interactions between condensed matter and much of the rest of modern science. Both titles reinforce Annual Reviews’ reputation for authoritative reviews that assess and filter the wealth of primary literature. This process has helped experts and nonspecialists identify key sources and overcome “information overload” for more than 75 years.
The Annual Review of Condensed Matter Physics is edited by James S. Langer of the University of California, Santa Barbara. “We plan to publish critical appraisals of emerging topics, constructing each volume as a useful sample of the most important ongoing developments,” said Professor Langer. “Authors will be encouraged to explain experimental techniques and theoretical points of view, and to express their opinions about the most promising directions for new investigations.”

John M. Prausnitz, of the University of California, Berkeley, edits the Annual Review of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. The new journal was prompted by “the growing breadth of chemical engineering research and practice,” said Professor Prausnitz. “Chemical engineers are concerned with an ever-growing variety of topics and this Annual Review contributes to the unification of their many different interests. It is designed to provide guidance and inspiration not only to those who work in a particular subset of chemical engineering, but also those in adjacent fields who would like to become familiar with recent progress and problems.”

The role of Annual Reviews in introducing new or related researchers to a topic, connecting them to the wider literature and identifying the most critical information will be further explored in a paper to be co-presented by Annual Reviews’ Andrea Lopez and Jill Emery, Marketing and Social Media Specialist for Electronic Resources & Libraries, LLC, at the Charleston Conference this coming November.

Annual Reviews (http://www.annualreviews.org) intelligently synthesizes the definitive books, articles and other academic sources in biomedical, life, physical and social sciences, including economics. Its objective overviews prevent duplication of research effort, address conflicting studies, root out errors of fact or concept, and suggest effective new research directions. They provide a gateway to the most significant literature within a topic. Personal copies are available at a reduced rate and institutional site license options are available. Annual Reviews endorses the KBART Recommended Practice for metadata transfer to help libraries and their technology partners provide seamless access to its online journals.
