Well, I won't debate whether they are greedy or not, but either way, they are setting themselves up for a lot of libraries to cancel their subscriptions.  The first one has a rate increase of 700%.  That's absolutely outrageous.

I already replied to Dale separately, but this is what happens when publishers decide to use Tier pricing – the “larger” institutions get hit with big increases.  Tier 1 is for institutions with 1-5 users, Tier 2 is for 6-200 users.   To me this shows a total lack of understanding of how most libraries operate – or I could be really cynical and say they understand only too well, and are being greedy.  But if everyone cancels the subscription because they can’t afford a 300% or more increase, it may just backfire on the publisher.

We just received our price notifications yesterday and were ..... amazed.  We currently have print only subs which the publisher will no longer permit for institutions.

Below are our new subscription rates for 2011:
The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (previously $650) = $5000
The American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology (previously $275) = $1975

Have other libraries encountered the dramatic price rise of American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine from $700 to $2250? I guess this will be the end of our subscription.
