Serials Librarian I/II/III

 

The Wayne State University Library System seeks a dynamic, service-oriented individual to play a key role in Acquisitions & Serials, New Media & Information Technology Department.

 

Position Purpose: The successful candidate will lead 6 FTE staff in the procurement and management of serial materials for the Library System.  This position is a member of a team of information professionals committed to the development, implementation and management of policies and procedures leading to the successful acquisition, access, preservation and fiscal control of serial resources in all formats.

 

Essential Functions:  The Serials Librarian will focus on supporting core areas in serials management.  Develop effective utilization of technology to streamline workflow and processes; Manage personnel including training and development; establish effective vendor relationships; Verification and reconciliation for licensed electronic resources, vendor communication management, support for core ILS functions (such as records maintenance,) and assist Technical Services staff to identify and resolve procedural matters related to cataloguing and management of resources (both print and online).  Responsible for routine maintenance of all subscriptions, including claiming, binding and check-in; This position will contribute to the overall operation of the Technical Services Department, which is responsible for the functions of acquisitions, materials preparation, cataloging, serials control, government documents, and gifts processing.

 

Minimum Qualifications:  ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS degree is required; experience working in an academic library setting or equivalent large library system; a minimum of three to five years of progressively responsible serials experience is required, including supervisory experience; broad knowledge and understanding of current trends in higher education, academic libraries, the publishing industry and management of serials; demonstrated analytical and organizational skills; superior  interpersonal, collegial and communication skills (both oral and written); demonstrated ability to set and adjust priorities and workflow in a dynamic and changing environment and accept new challenges to realize goals; ability to work independently as well as part of a team and emphasize a good balance between quality and productivity; an understanding of the issues of content ownership vs. access, including electronic resource licensing; ability to analyze work processes and introduce appropriate technological solutions for efficiency and user convenience; sound working knowledge of standard computer software programs (MS Excel, Windows); excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to win the trust and confidence of faculty, librarians, and library staff; experience with the following technologies: Innovative Interfaces, Inc., Serials Solutions, and OCLC PromptCat; experience providing access to serials resources, both electronic and print and successful supervisory experience, preferably in an academic library.
