Hello Sally,

It is my understanding that you must get rid of the 866 in order for the 853/863 to appear. This is also the case in OCLC Local Holdings Records (someone correct me if I am wrong! I do know an 866 in OCLC LH Records suppresses the 853/863 too). If the records have both, can you not just delete the 866 for those records and put off conversion of the other 866s (the records that do not also have an 853/863 in them, if you have any left)?

Theoretically, your 853/863 is duplicating information in the 866 (and vice versa), so you shouldn’t need both and you shouldn’t need to do any conversion. You should just be able to remove the 866 and have everything be fine and dandy. However, if your 853/863 does not have all the information that is in your 866, you will likely need to update/convert the 853/863s.

I do not know how many records you have and how painful it would be to convert them all over, but I am of the opinion that consistency is best, so getting all your records into Marc21 (i.e. 853/863) would be ideal. Ideal is the key word though...

Hopefully this information is helpful!

Subject: [SERIALST] 866 vs. 863/853 fields in III

Hello all,

Using Innovative Interfaces Millennium Serials Module, I noticed some records have holdings in both an 866 (older holdings) and in the 853/863 fields (current holdings).  The problem is that the 866 is suppressing the 853/863 fields so that the 866 holdings appear in the public display but the 853/863 holdings do not.  Must I convert the 866 holdings to 863/853 fields or is there an easier fix?

Thanks and happy holidays to all,
Sally
