Hello – I am an avid user of EBSCO’s A-Z list product.  Bottom line – I love it!  I have added all of our in-house titles (print & microform) to the list with no problems.  I have read through the discussions and will address some issues that were brought up.  (Sorry for the delay in responding.)

Duplication of titles – yes, you have to have the title match exactly otherwise it will create a separate entry.  It does not matter if the ISSN matches if the titles are listed differently.  However, when you find that there is a duplicate, you just change the name of your custom title to match the managed title.  Titles with no ISSN just have their own entry.  If there was a managed title that matched my uploaded one, then the records would be merged.

Updating holdings – I update as I need to as it is not hard to do using the Collection management tool.  For more aggressive updating, I download my list, make changes, then upload.  It is easy to turn a title off if it has been removed from the collection and I don’t want to bother with the upload / download process.

EBSCOhost Databases – we subscribe to a lot of EBSCO databases.  If you have your print holdings added to EBSCOhost, then the databases can accurately reflect the availability of an article in a title you own in your library.  I download my print list from AZ, tweak a bit, then upload to EBSCOhost.

Each print record in AZ will link to the catalog record – it shows beginning and ending coverage (which allows for accuracy of information in EBSCOhost) – and a note.  I used to do this with a Access database when we were keeping a print list but finally moved all my records to EBSCO and just manage the list that way.  Our custom resources are assigned a source name and these are listed in the list’s index.

I do not use our catalog as the main source for searching for journals as honestly, it has a very ugly interface.  I would prefer to see all of my journal holdings in one place whether it be print or online.  We do not have our online holdings in our catalog.

Our list is open to the public and can be searched by anyone.  However, if you follow a link for a resource we pay for, then the proxy server is activated.  We do not proxy the free titles – DOAJ, Making of America, etc.

Subject: [SERIALST] including print holdings in journal A-Z list

Thanks very much to everyone who responded to my previous question about tracking usage of current serial issues.  The responses were so helpful I thought I’d throw another question out to the list J

We have EBSCO A-Z, which currently lists online titles only. I was wondering if many libraries include print holdings in their A-Z lists, and if so, how often they update them?

Thanks.
