Continuing Resources Cataloging Librarian -- Assistant Professor

Position Description:  The Continuing Resources Cataloging Librarian is responsible for performing original and complex copy cataloging, as well as the enhancement of records for continuing resources and monographs in different formats, including, but not limited to electronic resources, according to established national guidelines and standards.  The librarian will participate with other cataloging faculty in formulating local policies and procedures.

 

The Librarian will also contribute and modify name and series authority records through the NACO branch of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging.  The Librarian is expected to develop expertise in all matters related to the cataloging of continuing resources and series authority control, and serve as a resource for other librarians and staff by providing training and consultation in these areas. The Librarian is expected to be innovative and maintain knowledge of national trends and developments in cataloging and metadata standards in order to continually assess their impact on local policies, procedures and training needs.  Librarians are expected to participate in professional activities appropriate to their position and to perform other duties as assigned.

 

This is an academic appointment carrying full faculty status and responsibilities including research, publication and service to meet both the Libraries’ and the University’s requirements for tenure and promotion.

The Libraries: The Cataloging department, with 7 faculty catalogers and 13 staff positions, in 2010, added 512,221 volumes to the University Libraries’ collections including 50,607 print monographs and 378,493 were electronic monographs. Overall, for the year, 452,281 unique titles were added to the Libraries’ collections.  The Texas A&M University Libraries participates in all of the components of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) as well as the OCLC Enhance program. 

Texas A&M University Libraries is a member of Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and is the University’s principal research and information center, providing 4.8 million volumes, 5.7 million microforms, 108,064 print and electronic serial titles, 936,270 electronic books, and 1,214 databases. The University ranks 11th among ARL libraries in materials expenditures, with an acquisition budget of $18.4 million. There is a total budgeted staff of 274, including 80+ librarians with faculty status. Librarians work in a sophisticated online environment utilizing Voyager, SFX, Metalib, Primo, Gold Rush, CORAL and a full range of automated information retrieval services.

Salary/Benefits/Rank: Faculty rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience; salary is not less than $48,500.
