The Systems Librarian reports to the Dean of Libraries or his/her designee and works closely with other library administrators and managers.   The Systems Librarian is responsible for assisting in the management of the LSU Libraries’ systems operation and has primary responsibility for administering LSU’s Integrated Library System (ILS).

 

85%    Serves as ILS systems administrator for LSU Libraries.  Among the responsibilities are the following:

 

Identifies and trains backup systems administrator:

 

ILS:  Manages the configuration of the ILS.   Coordinates OPAC customization and improvements with the LOUIS staff.  Works with the Libraries’ staff, the LOUIS consortium staff, and the ILS vendor to fulfill software development requests and refine the functionality of the ILS;   Coordinates testing and implementation of new releases of ILS software with the LOUIS office and the Libraries’ staff.

 

Security:  Creates staff ILS accounts and coordinates with ITS to ensure timely patron data loads.  Responsible for maintaining the security of the system and the integrity of the data within.

 

Illiad:  Works with interlibrary staff to understand and assist in managing the Illiad software.

 

Meetings, conferences, and training:  Attends all system administrator meetings, LOUIS Users Conference [LUC], and as needed ILS Users group Conference, ILS vendor users meetings at ALA, training sessions.  Participates in or coordinates training sessions for LSU Libraries and/or other LOUIS sites.  Hosts training sessions as needed.  Conducts training for library staff and faculty.  Develops ILS-related training for LSU Libraries staff and the LOUIS office staff and other LOUIS libraries.  Serves as a resource for LOUIS staff and on occasion for other LOUIS system administrators.

 

Information Dissemination: Informs the LOUIS staff of any changes in contact information; checks messages on listservs and responds promptly; forwards emails to other appropriate library contacts; ensures the library responds to questions and questionnaires posted by LALINC and LLN committees.

 

Standards:  Works with Libraries staff to develop policies and procedures that ensure the ILS is implemented in adherence to best practices and library standards.

 

Problem detection and evaluation:  Coordinates problem reporting and troubleshooting with the Libraries’ staff, LOUIS staff, and other ITS staff.

 

Reports:  Monitors and reviews all report output or assigns ownership of reports to appropriate staff; checks finished reports daily and deletes aged reports.  Uses ILS-based Application Programming Interface [API] tools to extract complex data streams from the system; notifies LOUIS staff when reports have problems.

 

LOUIS Electronic Resources:  Be familiar with electronic resources available through LOUIS, LALINC, LLN; provides LOUIS with any IP address changes; ensures ITS is sent patron data on a daily basis for controlling access through Shibboleth for authentication.

 

10%    Other duties as needed, usually related to hardware and software needs related to support of ILS.

 

5%      Other duties as necessary and appropriate.

 

Required Qualifications:  Masters in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited program; three years of cataloging and/or acquisitions experience. Three years of experience with implementation and management of ILS software. Knowledge of library standards, including USMARC, AACR2 2002 rev./2005 update, familiarity with RDA and other emerging standards.
