I wouldn't expect the agent to refund my money, but I would like the agent to provide the data they collect, such as a delay in publication, when generating my renewal list. Both publishers and agents want renewal commitments and pre-payment. Sometimes this commitment and/or prepayment is expected far in advance of the start date to the advantage of the agent/publisher. In effect, libraries are being asked to front money, too. This is in addition to paying up front for a 1 year subscription to something on faith that we will receive it. (Our accounting offices are not happy about this arrangement.) For questionable future publication, it seems that some agents have the data to better inform our renewal decisions (last issue published/suspended, etc.). Shouldn't it be included on our renewal lists?

Just my 2 cents (love saying that). Thanks for listening.

I am surprised to see that libraries feel that any agent should take the risk when a publisher goes out of business.  Agents make a good faith effort to pay publishers up front for titles that libraries select.  Often agents borrow millions of dollars to pay publishers and often wait months before libraries settle their account.

When a publisher goes out of business, the agent is in no way responsible.  They have informed their clients of the action and will refund any refund they happen to get.  For titles that cost less than $100 in most cases the agent has already lost money on supporting that title, adding it to the agent database.

Agents handle the dogs in order to get a few good titles.  So don't expect the agent to cover your exposure.  They didn't select the title, they only followed your instructions.  Handling all the record changes, etc. is costly and labor intensive.  Your agent has already put some skin in the game on this title.

Don't expect any agent to return money they don't have or can ever expect to get.

I did not subscribe to this journal through Ebsco and I do not subscribe to print journals through Ebsco but Ebsco might want to think about how much good will they might generate by refunding that money to libraries even though they cannot recoup it themselves.  On the other hand, a lot of ill will is generated when a large company like Ebsco lets small libraries and some large libraries take the brunt of a publisher who is no longer publishing.  It is one thing if you ordered the journal through the publisher yourself but if you are using a subscription agency, you expect them to sort of look out for your best interests.  Just a thought.

Apparently Ebsco will not refund any money because they can't receive any from the publisher.  We have paid for all of 2011 and will receive nothing.  Is everyone in the same boat with Ebsco on this??

Thanks,

Hello, Linda and Serialst.

I only can relate my similar experience with this publication.

I was working on claims for our subscription to the MultiCultural Review again last month. On March 22, 2012, I received an email reply from Linda Benson, who is no longer affiliated with the publication. I got her contact name from the magazine's website. She informed me that MultiCultural Review has suspended publication and that the publisher hopes to have more information soon. She gave me a further contact name: Deb Goldman, but the telephone number given is no longer in service (813-949-0006, x213).

The last issue we received was v.19:3 (Fall 2010), received in January 2011.

Your posting to Serialst today prompted me to continue my investigation with an email to Deb Goldman. Although, no one actually from the Goldman Group has replied to me for months.

I used to get replies from Sharon Altman at the Goldman Group. The last time she replied to me was in August 2011.

So, like you, I am waiting for something more definitive.

Hello,

Does anyone have any information about the status of the publication, Multicultural Review?  My subscription agent's website shows it as "publication suspended" and has a note that they have been unable to contact the publisher.  The publication website does not give any hints as to the current status.  I've tried 2 phone numbers listed at the journal website - the 800 line has been disconnected and the other land line is now the number for some poor fellow with a motor cycle shop who gets multiple phone calls a day.   I marvel at this man's cheerfulness!

The last issue we received was dated Autumn 2010.
