We had problems with pdfs in Science Direct about five months ago. At that point, I learned that there was (is?) a known issue with Adobe Reader that Elsevier has no control over that makes Adobe have intermittent problems with pdfs in ScienceDirect. We haven’t had any complaints lately, but it sounds like there is still a problem. There are two workarounds that I know of - right click and save the pdf or use a different pdf reader like ‘Foxit’ which is supposed to work well with ScienceDirect.

We had the same  problem with PDFs not opening in Science Direct, and the solution from Elsevier was to go to Adobe Reader and change the Internet settings under “Edit”  and then “Preferences”. Uncheck the “Web Browser Options” boxes and then click “OK”.  So far it has worked for me, although I’m not sure if depends on which version of Adobe Reader you have.  Try it and see.  Hope it helps.

I’ve experienced some problems as well.  Most of the time if I get the error message, I will immediately be able to access if click on the link again.  One day about a week ago that was not the case so I just didn’t try to access the rest of that afternoon.  When I tried the next day I was able to access.

Subject: [SERIALST] Elsevier journals access issue

Is anyone having access issues with Elsevier journals? We seemed to be having spotty access with Elsevier now at least for a week. One minute we have access and the next it is an error message opening PDF. We couldn’t seem to pin point what it is and Elsevier couldn’t seem to help us though they have been on it from the beginning.

If anyone is having this same issue and was able to successfully resolve it, could you share with us what you did?

Thanks so much for the help.
