Re binding journals:

Our binding budget was significantly trimmed (but not eliminated) several years ago. I worked with Preservation Dept. staff to establish criteria (mainly size and sturdiness of the covers) for changing titles from "we bind" to "we can leave them on the shelf as they are. The latter items are sent to our Marking Unit for permanent se-lin labels. This seems to've kept the binding budget within the range that's acceptable for our administration. For now, anyway.

Re tattle strips:

Close to thirty years ago, one of my primary responsibilities was basic serial check-in and, in the process, we tattle-taped 100% of journals & magazines going to certain locations (e.g. Reference) and 30-50% of other locations. Thirteen years ago, I became the supervisor of my former unit and learned those percentages had quietly (without consultation) dropped to 1/3 of the "important locations" and "occasional" tattle-taping (10% or less) of others. I also found out that someone in our bindery prep unit had to manually remove any strips before shipping them out or the binder would add an extra charge. I discussed all that with my dept. head (who's also my direct supervisor) and we agreed to propose eliminating the tattle-taping of unbound journals and magazines. We had discussions among appropriate libraries staff about all the known facts and were able to successfully implement our proposal. We've never been asked to revert to tattle-taping.

Hi Everyone,

Our binding budget will be cut this year.  I’m not sure by how much or if it will totally be cut.  What have you all been doing instead of binding?  Sending loose issues to the bound shelves when there normally would have been a unit big enough to bind?  If you do this, do you put tattle strips every issue?  Right now, we only strip the titles that tend to “walk off,” even though they still go missing.  What other options are there besides shrink wrap?

Thanks!

Mykie
