ALCTS webinar: Evaluating Print Book & E-Book Patron-Driven Acquisitions (PDA)

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time.

Description: This webinar will describe two patron-driven acquisitions (PDA) models -- (1) buying print books based on interlibrary loan borrowing requests and (2) the current e-book model working with an e-book aggregator and/or a library book vendor -- and will describe several approaches for evaluating the success and effectiveness of both models. Evaluation points include considerations such as subsequent circulation, appropriateness to the collection of purchased titles, subject analysis, cost analysis, and even a peek at the difference in future performance between user-selected and librarian-selected e-books.

Learning outcomes: Learn several ways to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of PDA plans. Feel more confident about the effectiveness of PDA plans based on one library’s experience with a print PDA plan (2000-present) and an e-book PDA plan (2011 to present).

Who should attend? Librarians with responsibilities in reference, collection management, assessment, electronic resources, acquisitions, collection development.

Presenters:

Suzanne Ward holds degrees from UCLA, the University of Michigan, and Memphis State University. She has worked at the Purdue Libraries since 1987 and currently holds the position of Head, Collection Management. Professional interests include patron-driven acquisitions (PDA) and print retention issues. She has published over 25 articles on various aspects of librarianship. Her book Guide to Implementing and Managing Patron-Driven Acquisitions was published by the American Library Association in 2012.

Rebecca Richardson, Electronic Resources Librarian at Purdue University, received her MLS from Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis and has worked at the Purdue University Libraries since 2004. Professional interests include electronic resource licensing and patron-driven acquisition of e-books.
