Improving Article Delivery Through Better Link Resolution: Updates on IOTA and KBART

To begin the forum, Nettie Lagace (Associate Director for Programs, National Information Standards Organization) will provide a brief NISO update.  The session program will then focus in detail on two of NISO’s Recommended Practices, IOTA and KBART.

NISO’s IOTA (Improving OpenURLs Through Analytics) project was a two year quantitative study of OpenURL link resolution rates across multiple link resolver products. Based on the conclusions of this study, the IOTA working group in 2013 published a Recommended Practice document containing a methodology for ensuring increased quality control in OpenURL link resolvers. Aron Wolf, software developer from ProQuest, will speak about ProQuest’s current work to put these recommended practices into action, as well as ideas for future efforts in increased quality assurance for OpenURL link resolvers.

 

KBART, or Knowledge Bases and Related Tools, is a NISO Recommended Practice that has been available to improve data communication in library link resolvers since 2008.  Earlier this year, the "Phase I" Recommended Practice was expanded to a Phase II publication that includes additional support for monographs, conference proceedings, consortial data lists and further definitions on communication of open access material.  Nettie Lagace will explain the updates to KBART and detail future plans for its upkeep and promotion.
