Libraries now benefit from an array of new content acquisition models, ranging from purchase to subscription to demand-driven and various hybrid models. Additionally, these models apply to both book and journal content, in both print and electronic formats. These alternative ways of doing business with publishers, aggregators and other vendors offer a new flexibility to library acquisitions and collecting strategies.

This two day e-forum will explore these models, discuss examples from a variety of vendors and analyze which options are optimal for different circumstances. We will also cover the challenges these models pose, including budget planning and long-term collection policy development. The forum will focus primarily on the needs of the academic library, though some content may be relevant for other library types as well. Additionally, the first day of the forum will focus primarily on serials and the second day will focus on monographs.

Moderators

Lindsey E. Schell is a Senior Ebook Specialist at ProQuest (Ebrary-EBL), responsible for serving academic customers across Texas and the southeastern U.S. She provides front-line experience crafting customized ebook programs for libraries, preparing them for the inherent organizational change that comes with new digital workflows and anticipates libraries’ philosophical and practical questions around collecting ebooks and patron access. Prior to joining ProQuest, Lindsey spent ten years at the University of Texas at Austin, managing electronic resources, DDA programs and subject liaison workflows. She has published and presented on the evolution of electronic resources in libraries since 2002.

Jacqueline Wilson supports management of high-profile University of California (UC) negotiations with large publishers and parallel coordination with campus libraries, coordinates various collaborative collection decision making processes, provides support for systemwide policy and planning efforts for the UC Libraries and scholarly information activities, and provides project management and leadership services for various systemwide library pilots and trials. Jacqueline has worked at the California Digital Library (CDL) in Oakland, California since 2002.

Previously she held various positions at UC San Francisco including Manager of Public and Information Services, Collection Development Officer, Education Officer, and Head of Acquisitions. She has served in leadership roles at UC San Francisco, at the UC systemwide level, and locally and nationally through various organizations including ALA and ACRL. She was co-founder of the Collection Development Section of the Medical L ibrary Association and of the California Science and Engineering Academic Librarians. She also has been honored with the NCNMLG Award for Excellence and the CARL Member of the Year award.

What is an e-forum?

An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate with other participants through an email discussion.
