This senior management position, reporting to the Vice Provost for University Libraries, will provide strong leadership and oversight for a new programmatic area that supports the University of Connecticut community’s research, teaching, and scholarship. The Collections and Discovery Area supports acquisitions, metadata services, electronic resource management, document delivery-interlibrary loan resource sharing, and discovery services. As part of the Vice Provost’s Council, this position works collaboratively with the Vice Provost and senior administration, responsible for the overall success of the University Libraries in meeting the teaching, learning, and research needs of the University of Connecticut. Additionally, this position will be actively engaged in the development, implementation and evaluation of Library goals and objectives as well as assist in developing polices and strategic decisions.

This position will supervise, train, evaluate, guide, and inspire staff who are responsible for the efficient and effective management of Cataloging & Metadata Services, Document Delivery & Interlibrary Loan and Electronic Resource Services. The incumbent will be responsible for taking the initiative to develop an area that is suitably flexible to meet the present and future collection and discovery needs of an academic community.

S/he will play a key role in helping UConn Libraries redefine its collections management, resource sharing, and technical service operations in the context of emerging trends in digital scholarship, open access, scholarly communications, and the development of next-generation resource discovery systems. The incumbent will also provide leadership in areas of copyright and fair use as it applies to collections and resource sharing.

The individual chosen for this position will have a clear understanding of both the opportunities and challenges inherent in the rapidly changing landscape of academic libraries and higher education, and will have vision and enthusiasm to boldly lead the area in evolving collection and discovery models. Using data-informed assessment and an understanding of user expectations, the incumbent will create optimal resource access and management strategies.

The incumbent will serve as a core member of the Collections Steering Committee and will work collaboratively with staff at the UConn Libraries, UConn Health Center, and UConn School of Law to develop policies and make strategic decisions. Additionally, the AUL for Collections and Discovery will take a leadership role in defining the Libraries’ participation in regional and national collaborations that preserve and provide access to shared collections of scholarly materials.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Masters degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited graduate program.
2. Seven years of significant academic or research library experience with increasing responsibility in areas related to collection management, acquisitions, metadata services, licensing, copyright and resource sharing.
3. Experience managing people.
4. Experience with collection assessment.
5. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
6. Experience developing and managing budgets.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. A record of relevant professional publications and activities.
2. Experience with user experience evaluations and usability testing.
3. Demonstrated project management experience.
4. Demonstrated ability solving problems.
5. Ability to clearly communicate complex topics to a broad audience.
6. Current knowledge of pertinent issues and best practices related to the programmatic area such as: a. Scholarly communications, b. Resource sharing, c. Licensing resources, d. Copyright and fair use, e. Digital scholarship, f. Use and transformation of metadata, g. Discovery services and h. Integrated Library Systems.

This is a full time management exempt position with an anticipated start date of December 1, 2014.
