The most direct way to get the number is to see if it’s available at the journal’s / publisher’s website; and, if not, then contact the publisher.  Depending on the publisher and its size, they may be able to break out the total subscriber data by country, type of subscriber (individual, institutional), etc.  If you are asked why you are interested in this information, you might want to mention what kind of research the faculty member is doing, what he/she needs the information for, as the publisher might see it as another way to obtain positive ‘reach’ for its journal and may be more willing to share more detailed information.   – Gaele

Subject: [SERIALST] # of subscribers to a journal

Is there a resource that provides the number of subscribers a journal has?  A colleague is trying to answer some journal questions for a professor, but is getting slightly stuck.  We are aware of Ulrich’s Web and the Gale Directory of Periodicals as resources for journal data, but were wondering if there was any other resource out there that could answer this question.

Thanks!

Katy
