We shelve according to the Main Entry of the catalog record.

When I started here, we shelved word by word with the acronyms at the beginning of the letter. At some point we changed to letter by letter, which is more in keeping with how a computer list will sort. We made the change at the direction of the Head Librarian. I recall some agony over titles like U.S. News...

Rules & changes to rules for when the title is the letters (JAMA) vs spelled out (PMLA) also come into play. The cover may well be the acronym with the official catalog record being the spelled out form.

We still have a handful of titles that are corporate body Main Entry & so shelved under the Corporate Body. The Pre-AACR2 rules placed a lot more titles under Corporate body ME. It's taken a long time for the CONSER records to be changed and many libraries, such as ours, may still not have changed all titles since so much re-labeling and re-shelving is involved. This is especially true for titles no longer being published.

In OCLC I even occasionally find print records under one ME and electronic under another. Chemical Society Reviews is one example.

Our current catalog displays are not good about showing the Main Entry so we do try to add notes to the Holding Records as to the shelving title.

Hi Bethany,
We file ours alphabetically, with acronyms shelved as if they are spelled out.  For example: JAMA is shelved in the "JO" section as "Journal of the American Medical Association".

Greetings,

We order our print journals alphabetically word by word. I'm new enough to librarianship that I only recently discovered there was a term for it (http://www.ala.org/tools/libfactsheets/alalibraryfactsheet27). When I first started working with serials I was taught to put the journal titles with acronyms at the beginning of the letter and never thought much about it until one of our staff working with students complained they couldn't find a journal (AETEI Journal). I was then asked if we could reshelve them alphabetically "like people would think."

For those libraries who still own print journals and file alphabetically, do you file word by word (acronyms to the front) or letter by letter?

Thanks!
Bethany
