Kim,

Instead of taking the time you essentially train you in how to handle serial title changes, let me suggest you review these modules of the freely available CONSER Cataloging Manual:

16: When to create a new description (when the documentation refers to creating a new description, it means to make a new, successive record)

14: Linking relationships (specifically sections 14.1 and 14.2)

As for the changed cover title, you can have something like:

246 14   First cover title $f $3 2001-2002

246 14   Second cover title $f 2003-

Etc.

This is covered in 7: Additional authorized access points and variant access points for the title

The 547 is only used in latest entry cataloging (when the entire title history for a serial was represented on one record).  Latest entry has not been used for over 30 years.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your suggestion, Steve. I have following questions for using one record to note all the changes:

1.       Do I note the title proper change in 547? Do I also put the changed title proper in 246?

2.       During the two years when the title proper changed, the cover title changed 4 times, so do I put those in 246 too?

Appreciate your help.

To determine the title proper, you will use the same chief source from issue to issue.  So if each issue has a title page, then use the form that appears on the title page as the basis for determining when a title has changed.

Cover titles will be recorded in the bibliographic record as MARC 246 14 (as long as the cover is not chief source...if there are no title pages in the issues, then cover (or possible some other consistent source) can be used as the chief source substitute.

Title propers of short duration can be noted without creating a successive record if the title appearing on the title page returns to the original title.

I'll be happy to cite RDA rules tomorrow if you have any questions.  Apologies for using AACR2 terminology but I'm not in the office at the moment.

Subject: [SERIALST] How to catalog a serials title that have different cover title each year

Hi all,

I have to catalog our College’s literary magazine that has different cover title each year for a few years. The title proper changed also at some point and changed back again. Do I have to create a record for each cover title change?

I appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks very much.
