Departmental Overview

This position exists within the Acquisitions Unit of The Library and manages 5 FTE staff in the Electronic and Continuing Resources Unit. This unit encompasses print serials receiving, claiming, and records management, as well as the establishment and trouble-shooting of access to online resources. Working under the direction of the Head of Acquisitions, uses advanced professional library concepts to serve as head of the Acquisitions Electronic And Continuing Resources Unit and to resolve highly complex issues in the following areas: electronic resources consortial acquisitions; maintenance of the open URL link resolver instance and electronic access problems; design, implementation, data population, and ongoing management of the ERMS as part of the Library’s Integrated Library System; and print serials receiving and claiming. Duties and assignments are defined by overall objectives and involve a high level of complexity in functional/subject area specialization or coordination. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Work is performed independently under general consultative leadership.


Leads a team of staff library professionals and/or assistants in managing the operations of the Electronic and Continuing Resources Unit. This position ensures adequate staffing, prompt processing of materials and activation of new e-resources, efficient resolution of access problems and print subscription claims, and the management of an Electronic Resources Management System. Recommends Unit staffing numbers and classification levels, implements Unit personnel actions: determines Unit procedures, workflows, schedules, goals, and priorities. Manages Unit GA and student budget and recommends training, software, and tools for staff use.

Serves as Berkeley’s Acquisitions Liaison to the California Digital Library. Serves as project manager for Berkeley’s openURL link resolver instances. Resolves electronic access problems; complex problems with serial and electronic orders and invoices; and performs other project-based work as needed. Also serves on Library-wide committees helping to develop policy relating to serials and electronic resources.

Analyzes, evaluates, interprets and revises or proposes revisions to established print and electronic serial processing guidelines within scope of assigned responsibilities.

Serials Processing: Oversees the Createsion of documentation for serials processing procedures and functions, in both print and electronic format, setting goals and priorities for area of responsibility.

Required Qualifications

·         Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training in areas of electronic resources and print serials acquisition, management and licensing procedures.

·         Ability to work in multiple bibliographic and other data sources such as Millennium, OCLC and SFX.

·         Knowledge of infrastructure and data management functions of integrated library systems as they relate to an electronic resources management system.

·         Knowledge in the area of serial identification, analysis and processing, e-access trouble-shooting and general electronic resource management.

·         Strong management and organizational leadership skills.

·         Demonstrated supervisory experience (including hiring, training, coaching, delegating, set performance expectations, achieve goals, evaluating and motivating employees to produce high quality work in a high-production setting)

·         Demonstrated communication skills including oral and written.

·         Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

·         Five (5) years of demonstrated skill managing 4 or more people in a library environment

·         Experience with SFX and Millennium Acquisitions module

·         Experience implementing or using an Electronic Resource Management System

·         Knowledge of copyright, intellectual property, and fair use as it pertains to e-resources

·         Proven ability to work effectively in team environment, including remaining calm under pressure, both as a leader and active participant

·         Established ability to deal with change, ambiguity and complex problems and to understand relationships between multiple library systems

·         Ability to use technology in creative ways to address challenges.

Salary & Benefits

·         Hourly salary range is $48,700 - $70,000
