We have about 120 print journals and barcode them, so that they can be checked out for 1 week. Older issues that have not been barcoded, receive a barcode at checkout.

We currently have just under 200 print subscriptions. Barcoding every issue that comes in is new – about 3 years. We allow all unbound and bound journals to be circulated for 1 week. If they are not barcoded when they are brought to the desk they get barcoded.

Currently most of our journals are online.  Prior, we had subscriptions to over 1,000 print titles.  We barcoded every single issue and allowed circulation for 1 hour for unbound current issues,  3 hrs. for bound volumes within current 5 yrs. and 1 day for bound journals older than 5 yrs.  Depending on the need, we sometimes extended the loan period.

Our library allows a three-day checkout with journals.  They don't go out often, but students who need something for a paper do appreciate having the option to check things out.

Since many libraries no longer bind their serials, I was wondering how many of you allow checkout of serials, including scholarly journals as well as other trade or popular titles you receive.

We are considering checking out serials.  What advice do you have for our library?

We are a small liberal arts college with about 250 subscriptions. Currently they get very little usage.
