Jennifer,

Thanks for following up on these issues, and thank you to all who have responded. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the response and size of title-by-title models too.

I’m currently breaking apart the points T&F’s attempts to make in response to the UK letter and think there are pretty strong counterarguments/questions (perhaps by which to build a US combined letter?)

More details soon.

Angie

I received an e-mail yesterday from a sales rep pitching exactly the “gap archive”. They now call the archive through 1996 the Classic Archives. A new archive of content covering 1997-2006 is called the Modern Archives. I immediately called and had a long conversation with the rep. I inquired if Informa/T&F is watching the discussions happening, and how we (FHSU) can remedy this loss of access.

I’ve been surprised at the number of large research institutions who have responded to this thread – and the large number of titles they are carrying. When I asked the rep about comparing our holdings against the collection packages and then providing quotes where there was greatest overlap she indicated that we would not be allowed to cancel subscriptions if we switched to collections. We would be required to maintain the overlapped titles and pay the collection fee. We than had a long discussion about access and double dipping.

We’ll be taking a very long and hard look at the T&F titles in the next renewal period. And so it goes…..

Best regards,

Jennifer

We subscribe on a title-by-title basis as well, and we have also lost access to 1997.  We too have purchased archives for MANY of these titles through 1996, so we are now left with a gap. I’m sure it is in their plan to pitch a “gap” archive at an additional cost. This is an unfair policy – we have made financial investments in their archive and have been customers for many years, accepting all of the price hikes as they continue to acquire new titles.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill also subscribes title by title to Taylor & Francis journals so we have also lost access to 1997

for our active journals. We have an archive through 1996 for many Taylor and Francis titles so now missing 1997 creates a weird gap.

Scott, fellow serialists,

We agree with this open letter as well, and perhaps all have seen by now that apparently T&F has reconsidered according to this announcement via Harrassowitz news:

---------------

Taylor & Francis to Reinstate Courtesy Access Back to 1997

HARRASSOWITZ has been carefully monitoring the recent feedback from the library and academic community regarding Taylor & Francis’ new policy to introduce a rolling wall of 20 years of courtesy access.

We are pleased to report that in response to an open letter from head librarians from more than 110 UK and Irish institutions outlining the disadvantages of a rolling wall for the research process and the additional administrative burden on librarians, Taylor & Francis has decided to reinstate courtesy access back to 1997 for “full access” Library and Subject Collection customers. This new policy applies with immediate effect.

For question, please contact service@harrassowitz.de or your Regional Sales Manager.

--------------

The problem is the reinstatement of 1997- is only for "collection" (aka package) subscribing customers, and NOT for title by title subscribers.  I'd be interested to know from how many title by title subscribers are out there on the SERIALIST?

I agree with the open letter to Taylor&Francis management from the Irish and UK libraries about the moving wall Taylor&Francis has implemented.
