Join a vibrant campus community whose excellence is reflected in its diversity and student success.  West Chester University of Pennsylvania's Libraries seeks a team-oriented, user-focused, and innovative librarian to join our faculty as the Cataloging & Metadata Librarian.  This is a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty position.


The Cataloging & Metadata Librarian will assume responsibility for the University Libraries main and special materials cataloging units performing original and complex copy cataloging for materials in all formats including print and electronic resources. The position will enhance the discovery of our collections by creating original MARC metadata records following RDA and AACR2, as well as other non-MARC metadata related formats (e.g., Dublin Core, EDA). The university libraries is looking for a librarian to lead the development of metadata policies including descriptive, administrative, and technical metadata schemas for the library's current and future systems including ExLibris’ Alma/Primo, ContentDM, Digital Commons and other content management systems. The successful candidate will bring energy and an expansive vision to the department, leading the effort to optimize metadata output and finding new ways to use metadata to expose the library's collections. The collections include Instructional Media Center (IMC) materials, multimedia, audiovisual equipment, juvenile collection, maps, atlases, special collections materials, rare books, theses/dissertations, and non-serial microforms. The Cataloging & Metadata Librarian utilizes Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress, and SuDoc classification systems and works with OCLC Connexion, ExLibris’ Alma/Primo, and MarcEdit. This librarian may have subject coordinator responsibilities for an academic teaching department. 


The University Libraries are in the process of developing a new strategic plan.  Once priorities have been established, this position will also be assigned a secondary, library-wide role. As a tenure-track faculty librarian, active participation in the intellectual and administrative life of the Libraries and University and maintaining a record of professional contribution is expected. 




                Cataloging & Metadata Librarian

     Develops, maintains, and implements cataloging and metadata policies, procedures, and goals within a team environment.

     Collaborates with faculty librarians to implement metadata priorities and projects.

        Provides access to library materials through descriptive metadata, subject analysis and classification along with holdings work and related authority work according to established standards and procedures.

     Designs, oversees, and participates in database cleanup and enrichment projects based on internal reports, changes in cataloging standards or rules, system upgrades, and preparations for linked open data readiness.

     Manages daily work and supervises the activities and duties of support staff/student workers assigned to the department.


Subject Coordination and Research Assistance

§ Selects library materials in selected disciplines and serves as liaison to those departments.

§ Provides in person, chat, email, and telephone support at the Research Help Desk during assigned day, evening, and weekend hours.

§ Provides in-depth research assistance and instruction in selected disciplines.

Continuing Scholarly Growth

        Demonstrates continued professional growth through publications, presentations, professional activities, and other contributions to advance the profession. Faculty are expected to present results from their research at professional meetings and publish in refereed journals.

        Engages in scholarship that includes research, scholarly, or creative activities required for tenure and promotion.


        Provides service to the library, the university, the community, and the profession through committee work, conference attendance, or similar endeavors.

        Participates in library and university governance (shared governance).


Minimum Qualifications:

        An earned Master’s in Library Science (MLS) or equivalent from an American Library Association accredited institution.

        Minimum 2 years’ experience in an academic library.

        Demonstrated experience in cataloging/classification.

        Knowledge of classification standards including RDA, MARC, LCSH, DDC/LCC. Familiarity with BIBFRAME and FRBR concepts.

        Experience using tools such as OCLC Connexion and MarcEdit to perform original and complex copy cataloging.

        Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

        Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a collegial academic environment.

        Proven ability to work effectively with colleagues, students, faculty, and staff.

        Successful completion of an on-campus interview process that includes a presentation.


Preferred Qualifications:

        Two years’ experience in cataloging/technical services.

        Familiarity with HTML and XML.

        Experience with ExLibris’ Alma/Primo.

        Second master’s or advanced degree in a related field.

        Experience with reference and instruction in an academic library.

        Familiarity with other metadata schemas.
