Getting On Board with Open Educational Resources: A Conversation About Collaborative Implementation of OERs

As higher education costs continue to rise, Open Educational Resources (OERs) are evolving as an effective solution to those rising costs. While the effectiveness of using OERs to reduce direct costs to students is obvious, implementation requires substantial work for teaching faculty and librarians. The Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) consortium offers course development grants to all consortial libraries for teaching faculty interested in implementing OERs in their courses. In turn, the course development grants break down a barrier to implementation and provide an incentive for teaching faculty to adopt and create OERs.

Anne Osterman, VIVA Director at George Mason University Libraries, and Jenise Overmier, Research and Instruction Librarian at Marymount University Library, will discuss VIVA’s Open and affordable initiatives, Marymount University Library’s experience with a VIVA course development grant, and the cost of higher education’s impact on collection development practices in general.

This session promises to feature a lively conversation with ample time for questions and answers. Attendees will learn about VIVA’s mission, Open and affordable initiatives, and course redesign grants; gain an understanding of how an academic library worked with a consortial organization to address the creation of Open or no-cost course materials; and leave with further knowledge of affordable content’s influence on library collections.

Speakers:

Anne Osterman is the Director of the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) at George Mason University Libraries.

Jenise Overmier is a Research and Instruction Librarian and liaison to the Behavioral Sciences at Marymount University Library, where she also leads the Open Educational Resources initiative.
