ALCTS webinar: Research Data Discovery: Developing a Data Catalog

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 AM Pacific, noon Mountain, 1 PM Central, and 2 PM Eastern time.


Description: Research data sharing is required by many funding entities including US government agencies and foundations. Many datasets reside in repositories on the web but not all. Some researchers store data on local area networks, hard drives, and even flash drives. This data should also be discoverable. The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Health Sciences and Human Services Library, created an institutional data catalog to capture datasets created by UMB researchers regardless of where the datasets reside. This presentation will introduce participants to the process of developing a data discovery tool. It will provide background information about the project and the Data Catalog Collaboration Project (DCCP), a multi-university initiative. It will also outline resources such as personnel and technology needed to develop a data catalog; provide strategies for outreach at both organizational and individual levels; review steps in building records including the development of a template, challenges of dataset description, metadata assignment, and the development of a workflow. Finally, it will include a discussion of challenges and lessons learned throughout the process.

At the end of the webinar, the attendees should be able to:

• Identify resources needed to develop a data catalog

• List strategies for outreach

• Develop a workflow for creating records

• Identify challenges in implementing a data catalog

Presenters:

Megan Del Baglivo, MLS, has over 25 years of experience as an academic librarian working in a variety of technical services positions. She began her tenure at the Health Sciences and Human Services Library as the serials cataloger in September 1999. Currently the serials metadata librarian, her responsibilities have expanded to include curating resources in the UMB Digital Archive and creating the records for the UMB Data Catalog. She has coauthored articles published in the Journal of the Medical Library Association and its predecessor, the Bulletin of the Medical Library Association, and the “Technical Services” chapter of Health Sciences Librarianship (Rowman and Littlefield, 2014). She is a member of NASIG, ALA, the Potomac Technical Processing Librarians (PTPL), and the Maryland Library Association.


Patricia G. Hinegardner, MLS, is Associate Director for Resources at the Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL), University of Maryland, Baltimore, where she provides leadership for the Resources Division, which includes Collection Strategies and Management, Resource Development and Sharing, and Metadata Management. Ms. Hinegardner has worked at the HS/HSL for over 30 years where she has held a variety of positions that have provided her with a broad perspective in librarianship. She has served as a reference librarian, liaison librarian to the School of Nursing and web manager. Ms. Hinegardner is a member of the Medical Library Association (MLA) and the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of MLA. She has published articles, presented posters, given presentations and has been active on professional committees.


Na Lin, MLS, is the head of Resource Development and Sharing at the Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL), University of Maryland, Baltimore. In her 30-year professional career in industries and academia, she has served as systems librarian, principle informationist, and manager. In her current position, she has led and implemented numerous technology solutions for library services. Na is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of MLA and serves on the membership committee. She has authored published articles, a book chapter, posters and given presentations.
