Here are some broad recommendations based on a similar ‘Deselection’ project:

·        Create a list [spreadsheet] from your catalogue Reports of titles & call numbers to be removed

·        CIRC staff pulls the volumes and Bulk Edit deletes the issues from the catalogue

·        From the same report, Tech Services staff modifies Summary Holdings statements in the catalogue and/or in your Discover Service

·        If your volumes are to be recycled and shredded, don’t worry about stamping ‘Discard / Withdrawn’ – it’s a waste of time. If they are going to other locations, CIRC staff stamps each volume with ‘Discard / Withdrawn’

·        Contact a paper recycle / shredding company to remove the bound issues. They should provide large wire cage bins

·        After all volumes are processed to Discard, place them neatly (you can pack more efficiently if you do) into the provided wire cages. When full, the shredding company will remove the bins and replace until all volumes have been discarded

·        The Librarians may want to inform their subject areas that a universal Periodicals deselection process has taken place and certain periodical volumes are no longer available. They can gently suggest alternate formats or resources for the titles the faculty may find missing from the collection. A good motto to have when deselecting library materials: ‘It is [sometimes] better to ask forgiveness than to ask for Permission’.

I’m in a pinch. Our staff has been tasked with coming up with a plan to withdraw all the bound journals by the end of Spring semester, May21. We are meeting this afternoon. Would anyone be willing to share with me some plans from a like project? Jenny

There is a beauty in discovery. There is mathematics in music, a kinship of science and poetry in the description of nature, and exquisite form in a molecule. Attempts to place different disciplines in different camps are revealed as artificial in the face of the unity of knowledge.
