Hi! We are proud to announce the publication of the first issue of the new journal Hygeia Internationalis: An International Journal for the History of Public Health. Please see the information attached, or go directly to the journal http://www.tema.liu.se/inhph/journal/. The editorial staff HYGIEA INTERNATIONALIS An Interdisciplinary Journal for the History of Public Health Volume 1, No. 1, 1999 Hygiea Internationalis: An Interdisciplinary Journal for the History of Public Health is now on the Internet. This official journal of the International Network for the History of Public Health (INHPH) utilizes the electronic publishing techniques developed by Professor Erik Sandewall, Department of Computer and Information Science (IDA), Linkping University, Linkping, Sweden. This technology is often used in the technical context, but is less common in the humanities. The initial phase of this venture has been made possible by the generosity of The Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Fund, Swedish Council for Social Research and Swedish Council for Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences. You will find us at http://www.tema.liu.se/inhph/journal/ Go to this address to find out more about the journal! It consists of two main sections: 1. the permanent journal proper with articles (ca. 8000 words maximum) and a division for shorter pieces on archives, methods, etc and 2. the section for "research and commentaries" (500 to 2000 words), which will provide an opportunity to present research underway and new projects, as well as comments on articles that have appeared. The articles submitted to the journal will be refereed. One of the ideas is to shorten the time between submission and publication. INHPH has as its stated purpose "to promote, in the broadest sense, the study of the history of collective efforts for the improvement of the health of populations from antiquity to modernity with particular emphasis on the interdisciplinary analysis of the interaction between ideas on public health, organizations created to carry out these ideas, their implementation, and their social and demographic consequences. To this end the network endeavors to improve communication among scholars interested in the field and to promote comparative research efforts." Every effort will be made to encourage contributions from a wide range of disciplines. Check us out and, if your research is relevant to our field, submit an article to our editors for consideration. All relevant instructions will be found there. Although this is an electronic journal, a very special feature is that it will also be available at a low cost in regular paper form for distribution to libraries, to the author or anyone else who wishes to have a copy in their hand. But, best of all, you are able to download and print all articles from the journal at no charge. [ From: Liselotte Thornell <listh@BIBL.LIU.SE> ]
