In the case of the New Left Review, because it says 'Second Series' and is clearly the same publication, I add the information in the 362 field under the 1 record rule. Thus, the cataloger needs to look at the publication and determine if the subject coverage is different, i.e. needs new/different subject headings, and/or the classification number needs to be changed. Note the wording, "and the publisher does not link the old and new systems with a designation such as 'new series' or 'second series.'" -- Mitch] -- Mitch Turitz ----------(2) >From nburns@PHOENIX.PRINCETON.EDU Mon Mar 27 06:56:10 2000 Date: Fri, 24 Mar 2000 11:14:31 -0500 From: Nancy Burns <nburns@PHOENIX.PRINCETON.EDU> Subject: Re: Cataloging new series of a journal (Mitch Turitz) Sorry, but I was consciously trying to avoid quoting the entire LCRI, so stuck to only the most pertinent bit. The rule cited by Mr. Turitz covers those annoying cases where numbering repeats WITHOUT "new series", "2nd series" or some such designation. These DO require a new record (lest shelvers have to deal with 2 different "v. 1"s at the same call no.). There may indeed be cases (I couldn't at the moment cite an example) where the "new series" introduced significant changes in subject matter, but I'd say they're pretty rare. Normally, an explicit "new series" statement calls for a 362 update, not a new record. Nancy Burns Cataloging Unit IV (Serials) Princeton University Library nburns@princeton.edu
