On the other hand, we have for years classified our periodicals and find
it works well -- after all, the students and faculty (and public in
general, for that matter) are used to having to find a call number
before trying to locate other library materials! It has strong support
from faculty because most journals in their field(s) are thus in fairly
close proximity to one another. Both the bound periodical stacks and the
current issues are shelved according to call number, but until about a
year ago the microfilm was filed alphabetically by title -- and was an
absolute misery to deal with when periodicals changed title, especially
within a volume. The microfilm has now been reorganized into call
number order, and is >far< less complicated for all concerned.
