The ALCTS Creative Ideas in Technical Services Discussion Group will
meet at
ALA
Annual 2000 on Sunday, July 9th, from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m., in the Palmer
House
Crystal Room.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  (Please respond by Wednesday June 28th to Katherine
Johnson)

This discussion group meeting consists of round table discussions with
8-10
people participating at each table.  We are seeking volunteers to serve
as
facilitators and recorders at each discussion table.

FACILITATORS introduce the topic, ask persons to introduce themselves,
keep
track of the meeting time, and, most importantly, keep the discussion
moving
and
ensure that all are able to participate.   The co-chairs will supply a
list
of
questions for each topic that facilitators can use to keep the
discussion
focused and moving.  Experience has shown that very few tables make it
through
all the questions in the time provided!

RECORDERS participate in the discussion and take notes of the
discussion.
The
co-chairs will use the notes to write a report which will be
posted/published on
the ALCTS Web site.  Facilitators and recorders will receive
acknowledgement
in
the report.  (Example:

below).  Let us know if you have a topic preference and if would prefer
to
serve as a
facilitator or recorder.

1. Electronic journals:  Purchasing and licensing issues
                Factors in making purchasing decisions
                Retention options for paper copies
                Retention factors for paper vs. electronic copies
                License negotiation: library requirements vs. vendor
terms
                Vanilla license: setting your library's own terms
                License maintenance

2. Acquisitions issues in an online environment
                Issues of an online environment
                Tracking vendors' performance
                Special concerns in obtaining foreign material
                Feedback mechanisms
                Consolidation of vendors
                Claiming

3. The future of libraries and technical services.
                Electronic environment.  Are libraries needed?  Are
technical services staff needed?
                Staff levels and composition changes.
                Taking on public services duties.
                Interactions between technical services, public services
and
information technology staff
                Level and availability of cross-training for staff
                Training and day-to-day support for staff with
developing
and changing duties

4. Supervision
                Continuing education and training of staff - where is
the
time?
                Keeping repetitive jobs interesting.
                Quality vs. quantity in work; evaluation work.
                Justifying positions to administrators.
                Morale and job satisfaction.
                Dealing with problem employees.
                Technology and its affect on continuing education and
training.
                Supervising supervisors.
                Keeping skills and knowledge up-to-date.

5. Cataloging issues in an online environment
                What do catalogers provide?  Aren't vendor supplied
records
good enough?  Do we need catalog records when key word searching is
available?
                Cataloging electronic resources vs. adding links to
library
web sites.
                Keeping up with changing standards.
                Evaluating cataloging.
                Balancing quantity and quality.
                Justifying extra time to create an enhanced record.
                Acquisitions staff as catalogers - what do we lose?

6. "Professional Librarian": Roles and responsibilities
                Shifting responsibilities in technical services: what is
the
role of the MLS librarian?
                What is the effect on other staff of shifting duties
downward?
                Justifying non-supervisory positions for librarians.
E.g.,
full-time catalogers.
                Job satisfaction.
                View public services librarians have of technical
services
librarians.
                Academic librarians as faculty members.
