Non-Tenured Faculty Position Vacancy

The University of Maryland invites applications or nominations for an
accomplished professional to
manage the activities of a large Cataloging Department. Under the
direction of the Director of Technical
Services, the department head provides leadership and management for
services and staff in five units:
Rapid Cataloging, Monographic Cataloging, Serials Cataloging, Music/AV
Cataloging, and Authority
Control. UM Libraries catalog on OCLC and are an Enhance library for
Books and Visual Materials
Formats. UM Libraries participate in all components of the Program for
Cooperative Cataloging—BIBCO,
CONSER, NACO, and SACO. UM Libraries currently use a CARL system,
however the Libraries will be
migrating to a new ILS in spring of 2001.

Responsibilities: Sets goals, plans, organizes and monitors departmental
activities. Addresses
cross-departmental issues in a collegial service-oriented environment.
Implements appropriate new
technology and practices to improve quality and efficiency of workflow.
Maintains an awareness and
understanding of national cataloging standards and cooperative
endeavors, and supports their application
in the local environment. Promotes the use of the latest technologies,
concepts, and practices that support
the organization of access to electronic information. Provides support
for 16 faculty librarians, 11 library
staff, and 6 graduate assistants.

Qualifications: At least five years of professional experience in an
academic or research library required,
two of which must have been in administration or management of a
cataloging

or database management effort. Must have a thorough knowledge of
cataloging and technical services
including demonstrated experience in cataloging. Must have the

ability to promote, support and manage effective change for the greatest
benefit/cost in the utilization of
staff and other resources.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
