Library Director Mina Rees Library The Graduate School and University Center The City University of New York CUNY Personnel Vacancy Notice No. FY-862 Closing Date: 3/2/01 The Graduate School and University Center of The City University of New York seeks an innovative Library Director. The director must provide vision and leadership in formulating programs and implementing strategies to integrate print-based information materials with an ever-increasing array of digital resources. The Library Director will support the research and educational needs of faculty and students, working in close cooperation with the Vice President for Information Resources. The Graduate Center, the Ph.D.-granting unit of The City University of New York, offers exceptional opportunities for working with doctoral faculty and students in a stimulating yet intimate academic setting. With 32 doctoral programs and seven master=s programs, The Graduate Center serves over 3500 students. In a unique consortial arrangement, the doctoral programs draw upon 1700 doctoral faculty from throughout the CUNY system. Situated in a renovated landmark building in midtown Manhattan, the new Mina Rees Library has over 276,000 monograph volumes and 1,640 serials as well as sound recordings, microforms, and subscriptions to CD-ROM and Web-accessed digital materials. This small but unusually interesting collection was developed to serve the needs of graduate research programs rather than of undergraduate instruction. The library's home page, web.gc.cuny.edu/library, provides links to over 7,000 web sites of interest to scholars. CUNY+, the City University=s integrated library system, includes the on-line catalog of the 20 CUNY libraries located throughout the five boroughs as well as some of the digital resources to which CUNY subscribes. Currently NOTIS-based, CUNY+ will migrate to Ex Libris= Aleph 500 software by 2002. The library regularly participates in consortial arrangements, such as licensing of electronic resources, with other CUNY libraries and with other library organizations in the New York metropolitan area. This tenure-track faculty position bears the CUNY job title of Chief Librarian and the rank of professor. The Library Director reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President and serves on the CUNY Council of Chief Librarians. This is a senior position responsible for the administration, budgeting, planning, and development of library information services. The Chief Librarian will also play a key role in promoting the development of digital services university-wide. Two master=s degrees or a doctoral degree are required (a graduate degree in library science is desirable). Also required is a demonstrated record of effective leadership in administration of an academic library, including recruitment and supervision of professional staff, development and management of the library budget, and mastery of implementing emerging technologies in service of academic programs.
