Re: Cataloging a journal reprint Mitch Turitz 12 Mar 2001 12:25 UTC

Pat:
Let's see if I understand you. You do not have the rest of the
serial, which is why you are concerned about cataloging a single
issue? I think you don't want to do it as an analytic (AACR2R ch 13)
but want to catalog it as a serial for which you only have one issue?
The issue is a paper reproduction. The fact that it went through an
intermediary step of being online is just using the web as an
intermediary equivalent of a photocopy machine (at some point it was
scanned into a computer - a scanner being a type of photcopy
machine). The AACR2R rule for description of facsimiles,
photocopies, and other reproductions is 1.11.
But let's make this easy: call it a photocopy. According to
AACR2r's Appendix D, the definition of photocopy is:
"A macroform photoreproduction produced directly on opaque material
by radiant energy through contact or projection."
I think your situation comes close enough to this definition of
photocopy. Put "Photocopy" into the 533.
   Keep it simple.

Subject: Cataloging a journal reprint

We have a slight cataloging problem involving a serial that I am hoping
that someone can help me with. We needed an issue of a journal that is no
longer in print. The publisher allowed us to download and print off a
copy of the journal so that we could put it on reserve. We don't have
electronic reserves yet. Our cataloger is trying to figure out how to
address the 533 reproduction note, the information for subfield A, type of
reproduction. She has consulted a few sources and has not come up with an
answer. If anyone can help with this problem we would be grateful.

Thanks for your help
