The patrons and reference librarians seem to like it a lot better than the old manual system since they can tell exactly what has been received and when it was received. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 15:35:23 -0500 From: Deb Dickson <ddickson@CREIGHTON.EDU> Subject: Newspaper check in I am curious to find out how other libraries handle newspaper check-in. Our newspapers are currently checked in manually on a printed out spreadsheet form with the title and date. We are currently working on computerizing our serial records and check-ins (changing from manual check-in using Kardex) and trying to decide whether or not to computerize newspaper check-in. So, for anyone that checks in newspapers on computer: Does anyone check-in daily newspapers on the computer and add the records or holdings to their catalogs? Do the patrons like this system? Thanks for your help in advance! The students still use the manual spreadsheets to write them down so they can quickly shelve them. The periodicals assistant then checks them in from the spreadsheet at the end of the day. Our patrons and staff love that we check them in online so they can quickly see if we have received the needed issue. We do include a "recent issues in current periodicals" holdings statement in each record as well as any archival film holdings. Hope this helps. Checking newspapers in online was the most helpful part of the whole system for me. I used to have patrons asking me where certain issues were. There is always a belief that we hold our mail somewhere! Now I train them to look in our online catalog, click on the check in card and see if we have received it or when we expect it. If it has arrived and isn't on the shelf, they can walk around the library and look for it. Marilee H. Currently I have records and holdings in the computer for most of my newspapers (ex.: Barrons, Chronicle of higher education, etc.). I do not have records for the daily papers yet - those are still checked in manually. When I get a chance these will also be added to the computer database. So far the patrons have no problem with looking up the weekly and monthly newspapers on the OPAC. Debra J.
