Subject: hail and farewell

My dear friends and colleagues, in 45 more hours I will walk out of the
library (without looking back, as many of you know!) and my career as a
librarian will be finished: I'M RETIRING!!!

yes, I know that's shouting -- consider it really a cheer, okay?

There are of course some things I'll miss: helping the students at the
reference desk, being able to do research online & in those traditional
things called "books", "indexes", and "journals" in paper format,
meeting colleagues at conferences, the support of all of you when I have
questions or need information -- but I can still keep my membership in
NASIG, and attend at least one more conference, I'll continue going to
the Crimean conference and to IFLA for a few more years, and (once I get
my "civilian" email account!) I can stay in touch through SERIALST and
NASIGNET. As for research, once I get my emeritus status I can continue
with that as well.

I'd have stayed longer, but after 25 years as a serials cataloger I'm
bored out of my mind with the clerical work they're assigning to me now
-- if I can't use my skills, why stay?

SO: my sister (also a retired librarian) and I are building a big
2-storey barn/studio for all our antique weaving and spinning equipment,
and this spring I will begin my second career, as a full-time weaver and
teacher, with time out for travel and an occasional library conference.
I'll be moving eventually to the wilds of mid-coastal California
(Atascadero), and soon will have a "civilian" email address. I hope to
keep in touch with all the friends I've made through NASIG and this
list, many of whom I've never met in person, so for now (after Friday!)
I can be found at my sister's email address:
rosemary02@earthlink.com I'll do the formal sign-off and change of
my email address just before I leave two days from now, Birdie!

Wish me well, please --

love to you all, my publisher/vendor/librarian friends,
Kathleen Thorne
