Re: India Today International numbering Lynne Stevens 21 Jan 2002 22:05 UTC

Hello, folks --

I have just posted the following message to the New York offices of the
publisher, and eagerly await their reply:

Ladies/Gentlemen --

When we began receiving issues this year numbered Volume 1, rather than
Volume 27, I assumed that the printer had made an error. I now learn from a
message contributed to the listserv SERIALIST (whose members work with
serials in libraries), that this numbering is intentional. (The writer of
the message had called your editorial offices.)

Please know that such fanciful numbering creates havoc for libraries: there
are now issues years apart which have the same numbering, and, since most
libraries check in issues on systems which predict automatically, you may
very well receive claims for Volume 27 issues. I cannot see how this
renumbering creates any advantage to the publisher, editor, printer,
readers, or advertisers.

I speak for many other subscribers when I respectfully request that you
reconsider your decision, and advise your printer to use Volume 27, rather
than Volume 1 for future 2002 issues, and continue from 27 in future years.

I am posting a copy of this message to SERIALST, and, as a help to my
colleagues, will post your reply there as well. Thank you for your
attention.

Dear SERIALST-ers,

I called the publisher last week after the e-mail message bounced. The
reply was that since India Today has changed publishers, they (for some
reason) felt compelled to implement the new numbering. This of course
creates redundant and unnecessary work for librarians and confusion for the
patrons.

Subject: India Today International numbering

Hello Everyone,

I have a question about the numbering for India Today International (issn:
0254-8399). I see on the January 1-7, 2002 issue, the issue is numbered
v.1 n.1. Does anyone know why the numbering is like this, and if it is
correct?

Thanks for any info. you can offer!

Sincerely,
Lauren Irto
