I've seen it done both ways but my preference is to shelve each title by
its
call number or title.

Many people make the argument that they browse the complete run of a
serial
but it has been my experience that most patrons have specific titles in
mind
(from citations they have gathered). They are interested in those
specific
titles, not in the entire journal as a whole. Why make staff and
customers
do the extra work?

For example, our special collections department keeps their "runs"
together.
So you have American Monthly Magazine shelved in the D's with Daughters
of
the American Revolution Magazine. What happens is that both staff and
customers have to figure this out. Usually you put note in the catalog,
but
what if someone who has a reference to American Monthly Magazine walks
in
and just looks in the A's (the obvious choice)? And now that DAR
Magazine
has become American Spirit, will that also be shelved in the D's? Do
you
shelve the run by its first title, most recent title or the middle one
(as
in the case with our example)? It just seems like a lot of work to me
for
little benefit.

I forgot a little tidbit in my tirade. If you shelve your periodicals
by
call number, you can more easily get away with it. I think that when
you
collate journals runs that are arranged by title you run into more
trouble.
Shelving American Spirit in the D's is just so counter-intuitive that it
causes problems. Call numbers are not intuitive.

Dear Colleagues,

This may seem silly, but when you have a periodical title change, would
you use the former call number or assign a new one. I'm thinking in
terms of keeping new and old titles together on the shelf.
