POSITION:       Serials Cataloger
DEPARTMENT:     Serials
DIVISION:       Technical Services
REPORTS TO:     Head of Serials Cataloging

RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs original and copy cataloging and re-cataloging
of serials representing all levels of difficulty, all subjects, all
languages, and all formats including electronic publications, using
Voyager, OCLC, MARC 21 formats, AACR2, LC Rule Interpretations, Dewey
Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and CONSER
guidelines.  Performs authority work for names and series. Performs
difficult problem solving arising from obsolete or incorrect information
appearing in bibliographic and holdings records. Contributes authentication
and maintenance transactions for the library's participation in the CONSER
program. Assists Serials Cataloging non-exempt staff in solving cataloging
and authority problems. Assists in creation and maintenance of predictive
check-in records in the online serials control system.  Functions as a
liaison between the Serials Cataloging Section and the Monographic
Acquisitions and Rapid Cataloging Department, handling questions regarding
series or serial-like materials.  Makes treatment decisions for monographic
series on standing order and forwards volumes for further processing. Keeps
current on revisions to cataloging rules and trends in cataloging
practices. Applies new rules and brings changes to the attention of others
as appropriate for discussion. Routinely monitors such materials as LC Rule
Interpretations, updates to the MARC 21 formats, CONSER documents, and
email discussion groups such as AUTOCAT and SERIALST. Assists Head of
Serials Cataloging with documenting procedures for the
Section.  Participates in departmental meetings and deliberations.
Participates on library-wide committees and task forces. May perform or
participate in special projects or related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:  REQUIRED:  Masters degree from an ALA-accredited library
school. Experience with automated library systems, preferably including
OCLC. Working knowledge of one or more modern European languages; broad
educational background; facility with personal computers, database
searching, and network navigation tools. Knowledge of MARC 21 formats and
national cataloging standards. Ability to communicate effectively both
orally and in writing.  Ability to work independently as well as in groups.
PREFERRED: At least one year serials cataloging experience. Experience
cataloging electronic publications. Experience using Dewey Decimal
Classification. Familiarity with CONSER standards.

SALARY:  Dependent upon qualifications and experience, minimum $31,300.

ENVIRONMENT: Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, is a major
private university with an extensive library system. This includes the
Northwestern University Library, three branch libraries on the Evanston
Campus, and three libraries on the Chicago Campus. The holdings of the
libraries total over 4 million volumes. Northwestern University Library is
a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and participates in
programs of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC). Catalogers
participate in the NACO, BIBCO, CONSER, and OCLC Enhance programs. The
Serials Department is one of four departments in the Library's Technical
Services Division. Technical services staff work in a highly automated
environment, using OCLC, Voyager, a locally-developed cataloger's toolkit,
