Re: Determining the title of a piece Enrique Gildemeister 23 Jul 2002 18:31 UTC

As far as choice of 245 title is concerned, I think we've covered it all.
The only place where CONSER/LC differ from Sara (allow me to be
reductionistic) is that they would not agree with her giving 1st dibs to the
editorial page.

What makes this so hard is that we are cataloging for the world, not just for
our own libraries. I have been cataloging with CONSER records since before
AACR2, and I have to say, their records are really good most of the time, but
when they're bad they're really bad. I do not always view one CONSER record
in isolation from other records in its family. Anyway, there is always this
tension between following the rules, RI's, and CCM, on the one hand and
cataloger's judgment on the other. As long as we're in a shared environment,
we are going to have this, because we will be cataloging with different
pieces and sources. I say we're doing pretty well with things the way they
are (with 245 is concerned), all things considered.

So, I say, let's follow the rules, but remain ever guided by memory, good
judgment, and a flexible attitude.
