We, too, have struggled with this issue, and I and my colleagues have
been unable to design a method that does not include changing
*something* in either the checkin record or the checkin card. It
definitely is a great deal of work, but the alternative is even messier,
I think.

What we decided upon was to:
1. take the Faxon list of unpaid/non-renewed titles;
2. enter an arbitrary "n" in the currency field of the checkin record;
3. create a list from that designated item;
4. and then change the status in the checkin card to "unavailable" for
the subscription period for each title on the list.

As publishers decided to grace the subs for the year, those titles were
eliminated from the list and check-in cards reverted to normal. I think
it saved much needless effort in the claiming process.

Fortunately, I have excellent student assistants who performed much of
the entry work.
