Position:  Acquisitions Librarian
Salary:    Assistant Librarian I to Associate Librarian IV ($37,920 - $52,620)

The UC Davis General Library is seeking a creative, energetic, and
flexible librarian to oversee Monographs Acquisitions and to provide
leadership by working with bibliographers, Technical Services staff, and
vendors to develop and maintain cost effective and efficient methods for
acquiring monographic materials in support of the University's programs
of instruction and research.

Responsibilities:  Under the general direction of the Head of the
Monographs Department, the Acquisitions Librarian is responsible for
planning and administration of monograph acquisitions; supervises and
participates in pre-order verification, ordering, claiming, receiving,
and paying of invoices; oversees approval plans; develops business
relationships with vendors and publishers; monitors and evaluates vendor
performance; manages gifts and exchange program; works with subject
bibliographers to select materials, assess collections, and formulate
acquisitions policies and procedures. Supervises the work of library
assistants in the Acquisitions area (currently 13 classified staff and
students) and promotes staff development. Develops and documents
policies, workflows and procedures with Acquisitions staff.  The
Acquisitions Librarian takes a lead role in the evaluation and
efficient, innovative use of new technologies in a changing environment;
undertakes studies and comparative analyses of techniques and methods
for acquisition of library materials. Participates in planning and
decision-making for the department and serves on library committees.

Scope: The library uses the ExLibris Aleph integrated library system,
including SFX and Metalib software.  It conducts business with a variety
of domestic and foreign vendors. OCLC is the library's utility for
cataloging and interlibrary loan.  In addition to the Monographs and
Serials Departments within Technical Services, the Government
Information Department and the Health Sciences Library have separate
technical service operations.

Required Qualifications:  Master's degree in librarianship from an
ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent.  Recent acquisitions
experience in an research library or coursework; knowledge of research
libraries and their clientele's information seeking behaviors;
familiarity with vendors of library materials; knowledge of and
experience in use of automated systems in libraries; experience
training/teaching and preparing documentation; ability to apply
professional knowledge to the practical problems of the job; ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships in a culturally
diverse environment; effective oral and written communication skills;
ability to work effectively with library staff at all levels; ability to
work independently and collaboratively in a changing environment;
experience in supervision and/or project or team leadership; ability to
prioritize problems and solve them creatively and constructively.

Desired Qualifications:  Experience with various aspects of acquisitions
as well as familiarity with issues, trends and operational needs of
library acquisitions processes; knowledge of in-print and out-of-print
jobbers/vendors and the publishing trade as a whole; familiarity with MARC
formats and trends in technical services and automation; management
experience.

vacation and 12 days of sick leave per annum.  The University has an
