Visiting Illinois Newspaper Project Cataloger and
Visiting Assistant Professor of Library Administration
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library

Position Available: Immediately. A full-time temporary appointment as
Visiting Illinois Newspaper Project Cataloger and Visiting Assistant
Professor of Library Administration. Annual contract, renewable by mutual
consent of the incumbent and the University Library and continued
availability of N.E.H. funding.

Duties and Responsibilities:  Under the direction of the INP Senior
Cataloger, responsible for visiting field sites in Illinois, for
evaluating, inventorying and cataloging U.S. newspaper collections; for
determining unique Illinois newspaper issues in need of preservation
microfilming. Extended travel within Illinois is required. Primary
responsibilities will include the following:

1. Visiting field sites throughout the state of Illinois.
2. Evaluating and inventorying U.S. newspaper collections at field sites.
3. Gathering appropriate bibliographic and holdings information for
cataloging and union listing on OCLC.
4. Determining unique Illinois newspaper issues in need of preservation
microfilming.
5. Developing and maintaining cooperative relationships with colleagues
and librarians at field sites.
6. Performing original and copy cataloging of U.S. newspapers, according
to AACR2rev. and the Newspaper Cataloging and Union Listing Manual.
7. Assuming other duties and responsibilities as required.

Update bibliographic and holdings records in local INP database.

The Library consists of more than 40 departmental libraries that are
located throughout campus and administratively organized into eight
divisions. The Library Systems Office provides and supports the
information technology infrastructure for the entire University Library.
The University Library is organized in nine divisions, containing 42
library units in twenty-one buildings. The Library currently employs 380
faculty/academic professionals and staff, 125 graduate assistants, and 825
student assistants. The Library Systems office staff consists of eight
academic professionals, a secretary, and several graduate and
undergraduate students.

The Illinois Newspaper Project (INP) is part of the United States
Newspaper Program, a national effort to preserve and catalog newspapers
from the United States. This phase of the Project will concentrate on
inventorying and cataloging the U.S. newspaper collections within the
state of Illinois. INP is funded by a National Endowment for the
Humanities grant.

Qualifications:
Required:  MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution at time of
appointment. Familiarity with AACR2rev. and LCSH; ability to communicate
clearly in writing and orally; ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with colleagues and librarians at field sites;
ability to work independently, as well as, effectively as a team member;
flexibility to work within a fluid environment; demonstrated ability to
analyze collections and meet production goals within a specific time
period; willingness and ability to drive and travel extensively within
Illinois.
Preferred: Ability to represent the Illinois Newspaper Project and the
University of Illinois in a professional and friendly manner; demonstrated
ability in public speaking; knowledge of serials cataloging; working
knowledge of Windows applications, OCLC and MS Office (specifically Access
database software).
Desired:  Knowledge of issues surrounding preservation microfilming.

Salary and Rank:  The University Library's minimum annual salary for this
appointment is $39,000 and rank for the position will be Visiting
Assistant Professor.

Terms of Appointment:  Twelve month non-tenure track appointment.
Twenty-four days vacation per year, 11 paid holidays; 12 days annual sick
leave (cumulative) plus additional 13 days (non-cumulative) per year if
necessary; health insurance, requiring a small co-payment, is provided to
employees (coverage for dependents may be purchased); participation in the
State Universities Retirement System, which includes several private
options, is compulsory upon appointment (8% of staff member's salary is
withheld and is refundable upon termination); newly hired university
employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security, and are
subject to its deduction.
