Position available: Carleton College Library, Northfield, MN CARLETON COLLEGE LIBRARY NORTHFIELD, MN Cataloging/Metadata Specialist Carleton College Library seeks a Cataloging/Metadata Specialist to provide leadership in traditional cataloging and emerging information organization methods. Serves as a resource person for other staff concerning OCLC, cataloging, classification, database maintenance, record loading and workflow issues. Employs traditional cataloging principles and practices in description, classification, subject analysis, and authority control, as well as emerging metadata schemas used to make electronic and other resources accessible. Performs original and complex copy cataloging for a wide range of formats, including monographs, serials, media, online resources, government documents, and maps. Conducts ongoing environmental scans for trends and tools relevant to providing information access at Carleton, and experiments with promising tools that appear to be ready for adoption in a liberal arts environment. Participates in campus conversations regarding institutional repository needs and solutions. Through on-campus consulting, contributes cataloging expertise to faculty, staff and student projects involving the organization and retrieval of information. Leads efforts to repurpose data from a variety of formats for a variety of users and uses. Works collaboratively with all staff in a Technical Services department combining acquisitions, serials, cataloging, and government documents, as well as with other segments of the library, campus and consortium community on information organization & access needs. QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED): ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent in years of experience or recent training. Working knowledge of AACR2, OCLC, MARC formats, CONSER, LC classification, LCSH, and authority control. Cataloging experience in an online environment. Demonstrated facility working with computer-based applications and files in a Windows environment, including spreadsheets. Knowledge of developing metadata schemas and standards used to manage and describe digital collections in a variety of formats. Ability to plan, coordinate and manage projects. Organizational ability, sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, cooperative spirit. Outstanding oral and written communication and analytical skills. High level of initiative and ability to adapt in a changing work environment. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the proven ability to work collaboratively with all segments of the College community. Strong service orientation. Interest and ability to contribute to the profession, including research, publication and participation in professional organizations.
