Re: Service idea...opinions please... DuBose, Stefanie 07 Feb 2005 21:23 UTC

Hi Susan,

I got confused between SAS and Ulrichsweb; SAS will indicate that a title is indexed but doesn't indicate the indexing or abstracting resource. We're doing something different and analyzing our journals rather than our indexes--using SAS to determine various factors about our titles, then using Ulrich's to list the indexing resources. I'm sorry if I've mislead anyone about the SAS product.

Stefanie,
I was just talking with a Bowker (Ulrich's Serials Analysis System)
rep today and he said that SAS doesn't run a comparison and show gaps
where titles aren't indexed....
I am not sure what you mean that SAS "can pull indexing information".
Can it compare our subscribed indexes against the indexes where our
ISSN's appear and show gaps?

Hi Susan,

Your serials vendor should be able to provide you with the indexing
information. If you have a subscription to Ulrich's Serials Analysis
System, you can run your serial lists against their database and pull
indexing information. Also, if you have students, they could search
Ulrich's for the same information--it sure would be slower, though.

The information you'll gather will be very useful in determining the
accessability of your journals to your users. There may be important
titles, though, that aren't found in Katz or indexed anywhere, that your
faculty will need to let you know about. We have such a title, and I
wouldn't dare cancel it for the world.

Good luck with your project!

HI All,

I am the Electronic Resources Librarian here at Montana State
University.
I would like to get your opinions on an idea for a service that I have.
Maybe a vendor is already providing this service of which I am not aware
so I thought I would ask those of you in collection development of
serials:

For collection analysis, I would like to find out if all of my
subscribed journals (excluding aggregator FT titles)
are indexed in at least one of the online indexing databases to which we
subscribe.
I'd like to know where my indexing gaps are in covering my subscribed
journals.

Rationale:
With the use of my link resolver, potentially all of my journals -
both print and online are "findable" through an online index. But I want
to make
sure all of my journals are indexed within the indexing databases to
which we subscribe.

Is this a service that other libraries would be interested in?
Is this already being done by a vendor or through a local library's own
Systems Dept
efforts?
Please reply to the whole list.
Thanks in advance for your input.
