Re: JSTOR Print Titles: To Be, or Not To Be...? Mays, Allison 05 Apr 2005 15:35 UTC

We're a small liberal arts college library.

1. We have some overlap in print and JSTOR, but have canceled many.
JSTOR has such a heavy focus on archiving, it's the only truly reliable
database whose print titles we have felt comfortable canceling. We
definitely stopped binding those titles. We did not discard the print,
just canceled. Also, we only canceled the print if JSTOR's copy is
current; if there is a time lapse, we keep the print but don't bind it.

2. Space was not the big concern for us, mostly money. Although the
JSTOR titles are typically not the high-ticket items. Oh, if only JSTOR
would pick up some of those pricey science titles!!!

3. "Consortia" in the strict sense of the word are not what we rely on,
but other local libraries, or whoever has it in print via ILL. I think
we're hardly ever asked for a copy from the print version.

At one point in time, we did. We've cancelled a lot of print
subscriptions in the past few years but not because of JSTOR access;
rather, we've cancelled the current print in favour of some form of
online access direct from the publisher (e.g. a "big deal").

Like most libraries, we have some space problems. JSTOR has allowed us
to send print backsets to offsite storage.

The consortia we are involved with have not looked at any sort of
central "archiving" for the JSTOR print; they tend to focus on
collective purchasing and other projects (not that there's anything
wrong with this; you can't do it all though I would like them to start
looking at the issue). We have access to the JSTOR print held by the
Center for Research Libraries but that facility is geographically a long
way from us and is in another country.

Hope this is of use.
