Subject: Scitation Usage Report Service is Now COUNTER-Compliant

Please excuse cross-posting.

Melville, NY, May 10, 2005 - The American Institute of Physics is pleased
to announce that its Scitation Usage Report Service (SURS)
(www.scitationreports.org) is now fully COUNTER compliant. This means
that all processing and reporting of usage data conform to the Code of
Practice developed by Project COUNTER, an industry initiative that
provides guidelines for the measurement, creation, and distribution of
online usage reports to institutional subscribers.

COUNTER-compliant reports are now available for January through March
2005. All registered users will be notified each month as new reports are
published; it is no longer necessary for users to specify the start and
end date of each report. Usage data for each month will be available in
every report, and a running total for the year will be provided. In
addition, subscribers will be able to download reports in a variety of
file formats.

Subscribers who already have a username and password to the Scitation
Usage Report Service (formerly called the Scitation Usage Statistics
Service) may use the same login to access the new service. Subscribers who
have not registered will soon receive an invitation to do so, complete
with instructions.

The COUNTER-defined reports below are available for each subscribing
institution, as well as for multi-site and consortia administrators. This
marks the first time that consortia administrators will have direct access
to this data.

     * Number of Successful Full-Text Article Requests by Month and Journal
     * Number of Successful Item Requests and Turnaways
     * Total Searches Run by Month and Service
     * Total Searches and Sessions by Month and Database
     * Total Searches and Sessions by Month and Service

"AIP has provided usage data to libraries for years," said Douglas
LaFrenier, AIP Senior Director for Sales & Marketing. "With the American
Physical Society, we developed a usage service that several Scitation
publishers have used to deliver data to libraries. However, our service
always carried a warning about the inconsistency of publishers' data on
different hosting services. So we are very satisfied with COUNTER
standards - and pleased that we are now fully COUNTER-compliant."

COUNTER-compliant usage data is currently provided for journals published
by:

        * American Association of Physics Teachers
        * American Institute of Physics
        * American Physical Society
        * American Society of Civil Engineers
        * ASME International
        * SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering

Also, for the first time, the following Scitation-hosted publishers are
making their usage data available to all subscribers:

        * American Association of Physicists in Medicine
        * The Society of Rheology

"AIP showed its commitment to usage standards by becoming a Founding
Member of Project COUNTER," said Peter Shepherd, COUNTER Project Director.
"So we welcome the fact that AIP is now officially COUNTER-compliant, and
that it is able to assist many of the science and engineering societies on
its Scitation platform to also comply with the standards we've drawn up."

Scitation is a division of the American Institute of Physics, a
not-for-profit corporation chartered in 1931 to provide publishing and
distribution services for scientific and technical societies. In addition
to its own publications, AIP's Scitation online platform hosts content
from many of the world's leading STM publishers including: American
Physical Society, AVS Science & Technology Society, Acoustical Society of
America, Society of Rheology, American Association of Physicists in
Medicine, American Association of Physics Teachers, American Society of
Civil Engineers, ASME International, Earthquake Engineering Research
Institute, The Electrochemical Society, IS&T - The Society for Imaging
Science & Technology, Laser Institute of America, National Institute of
Standards and Technology, Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Russian
Academy of Sciences, and SPIE - The International Society for Optical
Engineering.
