The University of Central Florida (UCF) Libraries, Orlando, seeks a department head for the Libraries' Cataloging Services Department.   The Department catalogs material in all formats, and provides authority control and database maintenance for all collections of the University of Central Florida Libraries. This position reports to the Associate Director for Collections and Technical Services.  Expected performance includes active participation in the intellectual life and administrative activities of the Libraries and University and maintaining a record of professional contribution.  UCF encourages national cooperative cataloging projects, is a member of NACO, and catalogs an average of 51,000 volumes per year, and is currently migrating to the Ex Libris Aleph LMS.

Responsibilities: Responsible for the overall management of the Cataloging Services Department which consists of   a staff of seven other professional and twelve paraprofessionals plus student assistants.  Hire, train, and supervise staff and conduct performance reviews.  Administer operations for original and copy cataloging of print, non-print, metadata and electronic monographs and serials, and database maintenance. Direct the workflow of the department to accomplish its tasks. Provide leadership for a knowledgeable staff in an environment of anticipated change.  Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures. Create a positive work environment.  Together with the Associate Director for Collections and Technical Services, and the Department Heads of Collections and Acquisitions set priorities, allocate resources, and develop plans, policies and practices to enhance the access and use of all library resources at all locations.

Qualifications: Required: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school; minimum of five years post-MLS experience in cataloging work; experience using a bibliographic utility (preferably OCLC) and an integrated library system (preferably Aleph); mastery of cataloging rules, standards and practices; record of increased management responsibilities; ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a dynamic and changing environment; commitment to enhancing services through teamwork and responsiveness to clients.
Preferred:   Experience with the application of metadata schemes to organize and provide access to digital collections; experience with vendor supplied catalog records; excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills; ability to collaborate and to work with colleagues across departments; experience leading committees or teams.

Environment: The University of Central Florida is a rapidly growing metropolitan university located thirteen miles east of downtown Orlando.  UCF has 42,000 students, 4,700 employees, and serves a metropolitan population of 1.5 million residents. The university offers 86 bachelor's, 68 master's, and 24 doctoral programs and confers about 7,000 degrees a year.  The main library has a collection of over 1.5 million volumes and is a partial depository for government documents and patents.  The library materials budget is $5.3 million.  The staff of 123 includes a library faculty of 47.
